There is perhaps no science, art or field of knowledge that does not recognize Aristotle among the earliest contributors to its inception. Among the most well know Greek philosophers of the Classical period and a student of Plato, Aristotle is considered the father of logic and many other fields of knowledge. Among his achievements, he founded the Lyceum, the famous Peripatetic school of philosophy.

Professor William W. Fortenbaugh‘s recently published volume on Aristotle is titled ‘Aristotle’s Practical Side: On his Psychology, Ethics, Politics and Rhetoric‘. As the title suggests, the focus of this work is on the practical philosophy of Aristotle. The content includes analysis of emotions, moral psychology, types of friendship, temperament, and an analysis of constitution. The volume includes a study of persuasion from various angles.

The present volume will be of great interest to all serious readers of Greek philosophy and writing, including students, academicians, journalists, and anyone interested in broadening their understanding of philosophical matters.

Among other things, readers will like the way Aristotle divides human soul into emotional and deliberative parts. He looks at moral virtues in connection with emotions, considering animals to lack both emotion and virtue. He also analysis various types of friendships and the effect of vehemence. Finally, he justifies the subordinate role of women and natural slaves.

William W. Fortenbaugh, Ph.D. (1964) in Classics, University of Pennsylvania, is Professor of Classics Emeritus at Rutgers University. He is the author of “Aristotle on Emotion,” “Quellen zur Ethik Theoprasts” and a “Commentary on the rhetoric and poetics of Theophrastus.”
