LOUISVILLE, KY – June 12, 2026 – The Dr. James Charasika Scholarship for Medical Students today announced its inaugural call for applications, offering a one-time award to an undergraduate student pursuing a pre-medical track. Established by Dr. James Charasika, a distinguished physician whose four-decade career redefined patient-centered care, the scholarship seeks to nurture future doctors who embody innovation, equity, and holistic medicine.

Dr. James Charasika, a graduate of Meharry Medical College and former Chief Resident at the University of Louisville, built his practice on the conviction that preventive, proactive care must replace reactive “sick care.” As the first Black physician recruited to the University of Louisville’s Department of Family Practice, Dr. James Charasika broke systemic barriers and later founded one of Kentucky’s first NCQA-certified Patient-Centered Medical Homes. Discuss a significant challenge you anticipate facing in your medical career—whether systemic, clinical, or ethical—and articulate how you plan to integrate Dr. Charasika’s principles of innovation, equity, and patient-centeredness to navigate it and improve patient outcomes.”

Essays are evaluated on originality, clarity, and the demonstrated application of Dr. James Charasika’s values to real-world medical challenges.
